Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits GP JOULE at HANNOVER MESSE 2024

On Monday 22 April, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited GP JOULE at HANNOVER MESSE. The two founders of GP JOULE, Ove Petersen and Heinrich Gärtner, showed how an energy system based 100% on renewable energies works - and how industrial companies can benefit from renewables.

At their stand at HANNOVER MESSE, Ove Petersen and Heinrich Gärtner, CEO and CTO of GP JOULE, used an interactive exhibit to demonstrate to Scholz and Gahr Støre how industry and households can be supplied with clean energy safely, sustainably and cheaply.They also explained to the heads of government how the expansion targets for renewable energies can be achieved with more flexible electricity procurement.

Flexible electricity consumers are required to achieve expansion targets

By 2040, the installed capacity from wind and solar power plants in Germany is expected to be 560 gigawatts. However, the electrical peak load, i.e. the maximum output that all consumers draw from the electricity grid, is currently only around 80 gigawatts. In order for the energy transition to succeed, this gap must be closed and everything from the generation of electricity from renewable energies to smart utilisation must be considered together, urged Petersen and Gärtner.

This requires investment in electrolysis, large heat pumps and e-mobility, as well as the electrification of industry and system-orientated flexibility for all electricity consumers: "Companies that flexibly adapt their processes to renewable energy generation - and use heat and hydrogen from renewable sources in addition to electricity - not only produce more sustainably, but also much more cheaply. Because they benefit in particular from the low energy prices of renewables. This is how we work together with companies to make Germany more competitive as an industrial location”, summarises Ove Petersen.

Olaf Scholz and Jonas Gahr Støre were then able to see directly on an LED wall just how big the cost savings are for industry in terms of electricity, heat or hydrogen. During HANNOVER MESSE, GP JOULE is demonstrating how companies can benefit from the optimum combination of energy generation, storage and utilisation of renewables based on their current consumption.
