The electric car as a travelling storage battery

Reussenköge, January 25th 2016. As efficient and environmentally friendly mobility solutions, electric vehicles play a vital role in the energy revolution. Currently, one fifth of all CO2 emissions in Germany are attributable to the transport sector. However, the batteries in the vehicles also offer an enormous potential for electricity storage, and are therefore gaining in importance when it comes to integrating fluctuating power generation levels from solar and wind energy into the electricity grid. They make it possible to store excess RSE electricity and release it into the power grid when it is needed. By employing an effective method of energy sector coupling – i.e. precisely this use of excess electricity from renewable sources to enable mobility and transport while at the same time creating flexibility for RSE electricity – it is possible to take the decisive step from what is still purely an electricity revolution to a genuine energy revolution.

GP JOULE has now sent out a clear signal in favour of electromobility: only a few days ago, the company that specialises in the planning, construction, operation and intelligent system integration of renewable energy systems gave out a BMW i3 not only to each of fourteen employees but also the CEO of the German Energy Storage Association (BVES), Urban Windelen. "We are very pleased that the BVES in Berlin will also be enjoying electric mobility," says GP JOULE founder and CEO, Ove Petersen. GP JOULE and BVES are linked not only by the fact that the company's co-founder, Heinrich Gärtner, is also active on the board of the Association but also by an awareness of the central role that storage batteries are set to play in the success of the energy revolution. "Storage batteries are the key to a successful energy revolution. The integration of excess energy from renewable energy sources in the mobility sector offers enormous potential," explains Windelen. Just as GP JOULE develops and markets smart concepts involving energy sector coupling and the use of renewable energies in the heat and mobility market, the BVES is committed to demonstrating how the interplay between electricity from renewable sources and mobility can function in a quite uncomplicated manner in everyday life.
