Emden Energy Park enters the second stage: H2NORD produces hydrogen "From the coast to the tank”

Emden, 30 April 2021
A regional hydrogen economy based on locally generated green electricity is emerging in East Frisia. The nucleus for this is the Emden Energy Park, which was founded at the end of 2020. Its founding partners GP JOULE, Terravent and Brons Group have now created another joint subsidiary, H2NORD. It is to produce green hydrogen in an electrolysis plant with a capacity of up to 50 megawatts and distribute it initially via three filling stations in East Frisia. Only regional green electricity is used for electrolysis, including solar energy from the Emden Energy Park.

Partnership for green hydrogen to grow further

With the new hydrogen company, the founders also want to motivate other companies to join in. They have already found a new comrade-in-arms: SCORE Tankstellen und Mineralölhandels GmbH has announced that it will join. SCORE is not only participating in H2NORD, but will also distribute the greenly generated hydrogen at suitable and already existing filling station locations of its own. The Norwegian energy company STATKRAFT is also involved in the project, but not in the company. The planned electrolysis plant will be located at its power plant site in Emden and will be operated 50 percent each by STATKRAFT and H2NORD with local wind and solar power. 850 buses could drive cleanly through East Frisia with the amount of hydrogen produced.

As one of the managing directors of H2NORD, André Steinau from GP JOULE explains the concept: "We believe in a decentralised approach and regional value chains. Green energy should be converted where it is generated and where there are consumers. H2NORD is the key to making us fit for the future."
Claas Mauritz Brons, Managing Director of H2NORD and the Brons Group, adds: "Emden has long been an energy location and a centre for renewable energy. Now we are opening the next chapter and laying the foundation for the green transport future in our region."
The Lord Mayor of Emden, Tim Kruithoff (no party affiliation), also welcomes the founding of H2NORD: "I am very enthusiastic about the innovative strength in our region. Generating and producing green hydrogen offers new opportunities for the future. I am pleased about the commitment of the local companies to further develop Emden into a green business location. The city of Emden is also taking responsibility for this development."
As a contact for interested companies from the region, Eugen Firus, Sales Manager H2NORD, adds: "By implementing the first hydrogen filling stations in our region, we are solving the chicken-and-egg problem and taking on the pioneering role. I am pleased that many companies are already embracing H2NORD's hydrogen mobility project and becoming partners."

Green hydrogen to be available throughout the region

From 2023, green hydrogen is to be available within a radius of about 100 kilometres around Emden. Target groups include industry and mobility.  It will also be available at public filling stations for heavy goods vehicles, local public transport (LPT), municipal waste vehicles and passenger cars. The first distribution point will be the SCORE petrol station in Emden (Frisiastrasse), Georgsheil and Aurich are to follow. SCORE is also reviewing its other filling station locations in the region - wherever it is possible, the green H2NORD hydrogen will be offered in the future.
Thomas Ehrlich, Managing Director of SCORE, sees the expansion of the hydrogen filling station network as a pioneering step for the company: "We are aware of our responsibility in the energy turnaround and are actively involved in shaping it. We make green hydrogen tangible for everyone. For future mobility, hydrogen will play a central role in heavy vehicle transport - just like eFuels or electricity in passenger cars."

Turning green hydrogen into a tangible experience

The three founding partners of H2 NORD, GP JOULE (André Steinau), Terravent Investments (Jens Rötteken) and the Brons Group (Claas Mauritz Brons), SCORE-Tankstellen und Mineralölhandels-GmbH (Thomas Ehrlich) as well as the Lord Mayor Tim Kruithoff invited guests to a launch event at the Emder SCORE fuel station (Frisiastrasse 6) last Friday, 30.04.2021 at 9 am. The first hydrogen filling station in East Frisia will be built here and made accessible to everyone.
