The first GP JOULE e-bikes on the island of Sylt demonstrate that renewable energy and mobility make a perfect match.
Pedalling hard to beat the force of the North Frisian wind on a bicycle is a thing of the past. This is certainly true on the island of Sylt, where holidaymakers and islanders can now hire GP JOULE e-bikes. In collaboration with the Sylt tourist service ISTS, GP JOULE now provides e-bikes that are 100 per cent solar powered. As such, the new bicycles tap into the island’s natural elements of wind and sun - not just as a source of fun and recreation but also harnessing them to offer a whole new experience.
“Our e-bikes run on electricity which is generated 100% from sunlight on the island. In this way we want to demonstrate how it is possible for people to make direct use of regionally produced renewable energy - establishing a link between the markets for mobility and power. And of course by providing our e-bike service, we want to show people that there’s a fun factor associated with renewable energy, too,” says Ove Petersen, founder and managing director of GP JOULE. “The bikes have a range of 100 kilometres when run on electrical power, so a tour of the island of Sylt is no problem at all.”
The supply of 100 per cent renewable energy for the bikes is taken care of by a photovoltaic system consisting of 10 miniJOULEs installed on the beach promenade near the Westerland swimming pool “Sylter Welle”. miniJOULEs are modular solar energy systems made by GP JOULE that are easily affordable and well-suited for use at home, for example. They allow domestic users to implement the energy turnaround all by themselves - especially home-owners wanting to save money by harnessing their own self-generated power. The miniJOULEs installed in Westerland have a total generation capacity of 1,950 watts module output, ensuring that at least as much solar energy is produced as is required by the 30 GP JOULE e-bikes currently available for hire. This demonstrates clearly that a 100 per cent supply of renewable energy is possible in the field of mobility, too – offering both fun and independence.
“In this way, soaking up the sun on Sylt has a double meaning: Sylt is all about sunshine, wind and fun, and our e-bikes allow consumers to enjoy all these in the form of renewable energy, too. The bicycles show how CO2-free mobility can work in practice. Getting around by climate-friendly means is a top priority in Sylt, both for holidaymakers from the cities and for the islanders themselves. This is why we decided to start this pilot project in collaboration with the island’s tourist service - a very satisfying partnership,” explains Ove Petersen, founder and managing director of GP JOULE.
In addition to the classic GP JOULE men’s bicycle and a low-entry model for women and men, the “Bike & Sport Infocenter” at the “Sylter Welle” swimming pool in Westerland also offers a sporty mountain e-bike for hire. The rental fee is EUR 20 per day. The bikes can either be rented directly on site or reserved via smartphone app or the ISTS homepage before visitors set off on their holiday. A bicycle lock and charge cable are included of course. All GP-JOULE e-bikes are not just offered for hire at the “Bike & Sport Infocenter” but are available for purchase, too.
As an innovative company, GP JOULE is pioneering the use of renewable energy in the mobility sector so as to promote climate-friendly mobility - especially in the north of Germany. GP JOULE CONNECT is a programme offered by the company that presents attractive mobility solutions using 100% clean power generated in the region. The e-bikes are just one example of the many different ways it is possible to tap into the energy value chain.
